Michael A. Matera

Michael Matera is a senior fellow and director of the Americas Program at CSIS. He has 25 years of senior diplomatic experience and a Foreign Service career spanning South America, the Middle East, Asia, Russia, and South Africa. His work in the Americas has included positions as political minister-counselor at the U.S. embassy in Buenos Aires, director of the State Department’s Office of Brazil and Southern Cone Affairs, and chargé d’affaires and deputy chief of mission at the U.S. embassy in Buenos Aires. He has worked at the National Security Council on Russia/Eurasia issues, including energy policy. Most recently, he served as lead partner of Global Outcomes LLC, a strategic advisory firm focused on Latin America.

Mr. Matera holds a B.A. and M.A. in international politics and economics from the Johns Hopkins University, as well as an M.B.A. from the University of California at Los Angeles and an M.A. in development economics from Stanford University. He is fluent in Spanish and Russian and has a familiarity with Arabic, French, and Italian.
