Michèle M. Ledgerwood

Michèle Ledgerwood is a senior associate in the CSIS Transnational Threats Project. She also has past affiliations with both the International Security Program and the Global Health Policy Center at CSIS. Mrs. Ledgerwood has more than 20 years of experience in U.S. and European defense and healthcare environments. She has directed several multidisciplinary research programs and working groups for both government and private-sector clients, with a focus on military infectious disease research, biological terrorism preparedness, emerging science and technology, disease surveillance, trusted networks, and terrorist financing. For more than 12 years, she was the senior analyst for the U.S. Department of Defense’s influential Highlands Forum. She also has served as a senior analyst and program manager at Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), as a pro bono adviser to the nonprofit InSTEDD (Innovative Support to Emergencies, Diseases, and Disasters), and as a freelance writer for the U.S. Institute of Peace. Mrs. Ledgerwood has authored publications on topics including global cyber threats, U.S. laboratory capacity, complex humanitarian emergency response models, and the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy’s overseas medical research laboratories. She is also a regular speaker on the uses of social media in medical research, national security, and public health institutions. Earlier in her career, Mrs. Ledgerwood worked for two European defense consultancies and supported research at the Stanford University School of Medicine's Section on Medical Informatics. She received her B.A. in history from Stanford University and her M.P.P from the Harvard Kennedy School. She has spent more than 20 years of her life overseas and speaks six languages with varying degrees of proficiency.
