Major General Ryan Heritage is a non-resident senior associate with the Strategic Technologies Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). He began his career as an infantry officer, having served as a rifle platoon and weapons platoon commander, and 81 mm mortar platoon commander with 3d Battalion, 8th Marines. He served as the headquarters and service company commander, a rifle company commander, and the battalion operations officer with 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marines; and was the commanding officer for 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division. As a staff officer within the operating forces, he served as a future operations planner at U.S. Southern Command headquarters in Miami, Florida, the current operations officer for II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) Iraq; the future operations officer, 2nd Marine Division, at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; the current operations officer for III Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan; and the deputy commander/chief of staff for the Marine Corps Forces Cyberspace Command in Fort Meade, Maryland. His service in the Marine Corps supporting establishment includes series and company commander for the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California; operations officer and parade commander at the Marine Barracks in Washington, DC; commanding officer for the Weapons Training Battalion at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; as well as section head of the Program Analysis and Evaluation Division for Programs and Resources Department headquarters for the U.S. Marine Corps. He graduated from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. in 1990.
