AIDS’ Existential Moment

HIV/AIDS has reached an existential moment. As Covid-19 continues to pose geopolitical risks, there is a threat that the progress made over the past 40 years in the fight to end the AIDS pandemic will be undone. Covid-19 has exacerbated social and economic inequalities, placed further stress on weak health systems, and above all, highlighted the urgent need to strengthen global health security. In managing these dual pandemics, the global health community must adapt, protect, and integrate approaches in order to sustain momentum toward ending HIV/AIDS, while continuing to respond to Covid-19. AIDS’ Existential Moment will explore the progress needed toward reaching the new targets outlined in 2021 Political Declaration on HIV and AIDS; the current geopolitical climate; why it is still important to prioritize HIV/AIDS; and what can be done to bolster health security in low- and middle-income countries. Hosted by J. Stephen Morrison, Katherine Bliss, and Jeffrey Sturchio at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
