Climate Change and Food Security in Africa Series

Analyzing the impact of climate change and weather-related events on food security and livelihoods

The CSIS Africa Program is examining the ongoing challenge of food security, a perennial problem compounded by climate change and cyclical weather events such as El Niño. In particular, it is considering whether U.S.-funded efforts to build resilience have helped offset the damage caused by phenomena like El Niño. This work builds on previous research looking at potential avenues to food security, including boosting African science and research capacity and considering the role of biotechnology—including Genetically Modified Organisms—in increasing food production.
