Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy
The Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy conducts research on pressing 21st century national security challenges facing the United States and its allies
Held by Dr. Eliot A. Cohen, the Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy centers its research on long-term strategic competition, advanced technology and the changing character of war, and issues of liberal democracy and national security. The Burke Chair regularly convenes senior policy-makers, researchers, and other distinguished leaders for conversations on the future of United States defense planning and security competition.
The Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy was established and endowed in honor of CSIS’s first director and cofounder, Admiral Arleigh A. Burke. The Chair honors one of the United States’ foremost naval officers for his service during World War II, his role as a negotiator during the Korean conflict, his continued public service as Chief of Naval Operations, and his steadfast commitment to CSIS, beginning with its founding in 1962.
The work of the Arleigh A. Burke Chair in Strategy is regularly cited in media outlets like the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and on major television networks. Dr. Cohen is also a contributing writer at The Atlantic, where his writing focuses on national defense and current affairs.
