Enhancing understanding of competing territorial claims in maritime Asia

The China Power Project seeks to understand the current and future strategic maritime environment in the Asia-Pacific, and explores policy options to mitigate potential conflict in maritime Asia. Our staff works closely with the Asia Maritime Transparency Initiative, CSIS’s interactive website, designed to promote transparency in the Indo-Pacific. Through its research, the China Power Project aims to provide expert analysis and policy recommendations to US and Asian strategic thinkers and decision makers.

The China Power Project analyzes developments in the Asia-Pacific territorial disputes, particularly in the following research areas:

  • The impact of territorial disputes on U.S.-China relations
  • The U.S. role in Asia-Pacific maritime security
  • Mainland China’s and Taiwan’s responses to regional territorial disputes
  • Regional institutions as forums for dispute negotiation and resolution
