Ukraine, Belarus, and Moldova

After a quarter century of independence, Ukraine, Belarus, and Moldova find themselves facing a diverse set of political and economic challenges and prospects. Belarus is an entrenched autocracy, while Moldova and Ukraine have struggled to build functioning democracies in the face of domestic corruption and foreign intervention. Popular protests twice changed Ukraine’s trajectory. The last of these, the 2014 Euro-Maidan revolution, was followed by Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and military intervention in the eastern Donbas region. These events turned global attention to Ukraine as never before. The CSIS Russia and Eurasia program tracks developments in all three countries, working to ensure that the debate on these topics in the United States and elsewhere is informed by solid research and analysis.
