Ambassador Richard L. Armitage, Director, Armitage International L.C.; CSIS Trustee; and former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State

Richard L. Armitage became president of Armitage International in March 2005. Previously, he served as deputy secretary of state, having been confirmed by the U.S. Senate on March 23, 2001. Prior to that, he was president of Armitage Associates L.C. from May 1993 until March 2001. From March 1992 until May 1993, Mr. Armitage (with the personal rank of ambassador) directed U.S. assistance to the newly independent states (NIS) of the former Soviet Union. From 1989 through 1992, Mr. Armitage filled key diplomatic positions as presidential special negotiator for the Philippines Military Bases Agreement and special mediator for water in the Middle East. President George H.W. Bush sent him as a special emissary to Jordan’s King Hussein during the 1991 Gulf War. In the Pentagon from June 1983 to May 1989, he served as assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs. In May 1975, Mr. Armitage came to Washington as a Pentagon consultant and was posted in Tehran, Iran, until November 1976. Following two years in the private sector, he took the position as administrative assistant to Senator Robert Dole of Kansas in 1978. In the 1980 Reagan campaign, Mr. Armitage was senior adviser to the Interim Foreign Policy Advisory board, which prepared the president-elect for major international policy issues confronting the new administration. From 1981 until June 1983, Mr. Armitage was deputy assistant secretary of defense for East Asia and Pacific affairs. Born in 1945, Mr. Armitage graduated in 1967 from the U.S. Naval Academy, where he was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy. His full biography can be found here.

Ambassador Geir H. Haarde, Icelandic Ambassador to the United States; and former Prime Minister, Republic of Iceland

Ambassador Geir Haarde has served as the Icelandic Ambassador to the United States since 2014. He previously served as an independent consultant and speaker from 2009-2014 after he served as Prime Minister of Iceland from 2006-2009. He was previously Minister for Foreign Affairs (2005-2006), Minister of Finance (1998-2005), and a Member of the Iceland Parliament, Althingi (1987-2009). He received his B.A., magna cum laude, in economics from Brandeis University; an M.A. with distinction in international relations from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS);
and an M.A. in economics from the University of Minnesota.

Ambassadror Jonas Hafström, Chairman of the Board, Lund University; and former Swedish Ambassador to the United States

Jonas Hafström is Ambassador and Chairman of the Board of the Lund University from March 1, 2015. He returned to Stockholm in September 2013, after six years as Ambassador of Sweden to the United States and was appointed Senior Adviser to the Minister for Foreign Trade. Before that he served as Ambassador of Sweden to Thailand, also accredited to Laos, Cambodia and Burma /Myanmar - a position he had held since 2004. From 2000 to 2004 he was Deputy Director for Consular Affairs and Civil Law at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Stockholm. For three years 1991-1994 he served as foreign policy adviser to Prime Minister Carl Bildt. Between 1987-1991 and 1994-2000 he was foreign policy adviser to Carl Bildt in his position as leader of the opposition. Jonas Hafström joined the Foreign Service in 1979. Shortly after, he worked as the Press Secretary to the Minister of Justice 1979-1981.

Born in 1948, Jonas Hafström holds a degree in law and is a graduate of the Lund University. During his college years, he was President of the Student Union in Lund in 1975. He then spent the following two and a half years as District Clerk at the District Court in Nyköping. He and his wife Eva have three children.

Kate Hansen Bundt, Secretary General, Norwegian Atlantic Committee

Since 2010, Dr. Kate Hansen Bundt has served as Secretary General of the Norwegian Atlantic committee, a think tank responsible for organizing seminars, debates, and conferences in Oslo. She has been appointed chair of the board of the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) through 2018 as well as Vice President of the Atlantic Treaty Association (ATA) through 2017. She previously served as an independent political analyst and commentator in European Affairs (2006-2010); director of research at the Oslo-based think tank, European Program (1993-2005); and as a fellow at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) (1992-1993). She has held membership on many Norwegian government committees including the Expert Commission on Norwegian Security and Defence Policy (2014-2015); the EEA Review Committee (2010-2012); and the Stoltenberg II Advisory Board on Security Policy, Disarmament, and International Challenges to Norwegian Security. She graduated from the University of Oslo with a degree in political science.

Her Excellency Marina Kaljurand, Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Estonia

Marina Kaljurand served as Estonian Foreign Minister from 2015 July – 2016 October. She began her career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1991 and had since held several leadership positions, including Undersecretary for Legal and Consular Affairs (Legal Adviser), Undersecretary for Trade and Development Cooperation, Undersecretary for Political Affairs. She has also been appointed as Ambassador of Estonia to several countries, including the State of Israel, the Russian Federation, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Canada, and the United States. She has played an important role as expert and negotiator in the process of Russian troop withdrawal and in negotiations on land and maritime boundaries agreements between Estonia and the Russian Federation, as well as in the accession negotiations of Estonia to the European Union and to the OECD. Marina Kaljurand has been appointed twice to serve as the Estonian National Expert at the United Nations Group of Governmental Experts on Developments in the Field of Information and Telecommunications in the Context of International Security, in 2014-2015 and currently.

Marina Kaljurand graduated with cum laude from Tartu University (M.A. in Law), she also has a professional diploma from Estonian School of Diplomacy and an M.A. degree in International Law and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. She is fluent in Estonian, English and Russian.

Alice Rogoff, Publisher and Owner, Arctic Now; and Chair of the Advisory Board, Arctic Circle

Alice is Rogoff is the publisher and owner of Arctic Now. She also serves as the Chair of the Advisory Board of Arctic Circle. She is the former publisher and owner of Alaska Dispatch. From 1985 to 1997, she was chief financial officer of U.S News and World Report. She served at The Washington Post Co. as assistant to publisher Donald Graham, and she was the creator of the Post's National Weekly Edition. Earlier in her career she served in President Jimmy Carter's administration as special assistant to director of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. Alice is also the founder of Arctic Imperative, a lecture series dedicated to raising awareness of circumpolar north issues. And she is co-founder of a number of other organizations, including the Alaska Native Arts Foundation.

Admiral Gary Roughead (USN Ret.), Robert and Marion Oster Distinguished Military Fellow, Hoover Institution, Stanford University

Admiral Roughead served as the U.S. Navy’s 29th Chief of Naval Operations after holding six operational commands and is one of only two officers in the history of the Navy to have commanded both the U.S. Atlantic and Pacific Fleets.
As the Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Roughead led the Navy through a challenging period of transition in fiscal, security and personnel matters. He accelerated the Navy’s capability and capacity in ballistic missile defense and unmanned air and underwater systems. He reestablished the 4th and 10th Fleets to better focus on the Western Hemisphere and cyber operations respectively and introduced bold programs to prepare for the primacy of information in warfare.

 In retirement, Admiral Roughead is the Robert and Marion Oster Distinguished Military Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University and serves on the boards of directors of the Northrop Grumman Corporation, Maersk Lines, Ltd and the Center for a New American Security. He is a Trustee of Dodge and Cox Funds and serves on the Board of Managers of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory. He advises companies in the national security and medical sectors.

Ambassador Peter Taksøe-Jensen , Danish Ambassador to India

Ambassador Peter Taksøe-Jensen serves as Ambassador of Denmark to India, Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka. He previously served as Ambassador of Denmark to the United States (2010- 2015), United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Legal Affairs (2008-2010), Under-Secretary for Legal Affairs and Head of the Legal Service, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark (2003-2008), Head of Section, Department for Legal Service, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark (1999- 2003), and Head of Section, Permanent Representation of Denmark to the European Union (1995-1999).
