Global Aging Preparedness Project
The Global Aging Preparedness Index (or GAP Index) provides the first comprehensive quantitative assessment of the progress that countries worldwide are making in preparing for global aging, and particularly the old-age dependency dimension of the challenge.
The Global Aging Preparedness Project is a multiyear research project carried out by the Center for Strategic and International Studies’ (CSIS) Global Aging Initiative with financial support from Prudential plc. The purpose of the project, which was launched in October 2010, is to help advance understanding of the global aging challenge among policymakers, the media, and the public.
The project’s flagship publication is The Global Aging Preparedness Index, or GAP Index, which provides a unique new quantitative framework for assessing the fiscal sustainability and income adequacy of retirement systems around the world. In addition to the GAP Index, which is now in its second edition, the project includes in-depth studies focused on particular regions or issues. The first of these studies, Balancing Tradition and Modernity: The Future of Retirement in East Asia, explores how rapid development and rapid aging are transforming retirement behavior and expectations in the most economically important region of the emerging world.
Supplemental data and other materials related to the report are available on the project website at gapindex.csis.org.
