Private-Sector Development in Complex Environments

Improving development and business outcomes in places affected by conflict, violence, and fragility.

Economic activity takes place even in parts of fragile countries affected by conflict and violence, demonstrating that some local market actors- formal, informal, and illicit- have found ways to manage risks. Led by Sadika Hameed and Robert D. Lamb of CSIS's Program on Crisis, Conflict, and Cooperation (C3), this line of research identifies opportunities to increase ecnomic activity, manage risks, and capture positive spillovers to improve human development in places where official development assistance has not made as much progress as hoped.
