Work on the Move

Bolstering livelihoods for displaced populations in the Middle East

Millions of people across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) are stuck in limbo. Most refugees have no prospect of returning to their homes, integrating into host communities, or being resettled in a third country. The average displacement of a refugee is now 20 years, which is longer than ever before. CSIS is analyzing more effective ways to create sustainable livelihood opportunities for displaced individuals in the MENA region. As well as identifying successful efforts to confront the obstacles to livelihoods in the region and beyond, CSIS will assess potential remote work for displaced communities and propose strategies to expand their access to these opportunities. CSIS will release its findings in the fall of 2024.
