Africa Notes: South Africa and Regional Peacekeeping - August 1996

In April I996 South Africa donated R I2.6 million (about $3.2 million) to the United Nations in aid of international peacekeeping operations in Africa. The amount, equal to about 80 percent of South Africa's regular UN budget assessment, was "over and above" Pretoria's other voluntary contributions. The donation fulfilled a December I995 commitment made by South Africa's permanent representative to the UN , Khiphusizi Jele, following the adoption of UN General Assembly Resolution 50/83, which absolved South Africa of its membership arrears accrued during the apartheid years.
