Security and Defense in Northern Europe

The Security and Defense in Northern Europe research program explores key drivers and opportunities for the collective defense of the region.

Northern Europe’s security environment continues to face unpredictable challenges, including traditional and unconventional threats in the land, air, maritime, and cyber theaters. Broad pressure on national and alliance defense budgets have also strained resources and capabilities to defend the region. To analyze these challenges and methods to strengthen cooperation amongst NATO allies in Northern Europe, the CSIS Stuart Center, the Norwegian Institute for Defense Studies (IFS), the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), and the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) are undertaking a multi-year research program, Security and Defense in Northern Europe (SNE). Partners will contribute insights and develops in unilateral and multilateral security cooperation in the region through research projects and locally-hosted workshops.
