Post-Soviet Europe
Twenty-five years after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Soviet Union’s successor states continue to experience the political, economic and security effects of 70 years of Soviet rule. While Russia charts an increasingly assertive regional course, other states, including Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus, have faced challenges defining their relationships with Moscow on the one hand and European and transatlantic institutions on the other. The research of the CSIS Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Program together sheds light on the internal dynamics in these states, their relationships with one other, their broader foreign and security policies, and the implications of their choices and circumstances for their neighbors, the United States, and the rest of the world.
