Sarah Mendelson and Ted Gerber (University of Wisconsin-Madison) presented findings on young Russian women's attitudes towards human trafficking, prostitution, and discrimination and harassment in the workplace and educational institutions.

Accountability in Peacekeeping Missions and 1325 Implementation

The Finnish Embassy, CSIS, and the American Society of International Law hosted a half-day meeting with representatives from the NGO community on the implementation of policies adopted in 2004 by the UN, the U.S. Department of Defense, and NATO on human trafficking and sexual exploitation and abuse.  Noting discrepancies between these policies and the continued prevalence of sexual exploitation, invited experts sought ways to improve implementation over the next two years.  This event was made possible by the Finnish Embassy and the Gruber Family Foundation.

Human Trafficking and Peacekeeping Operations

Dr. Helga Konrad, OSCE Special Representative on Combating Trafficking in Human Beings, discussed the need for NGOs and international organizations such as the OSCE to help monitor the implementation of recent policies adopted by NATO, the UN, and the U.S. Department of Defense on human trafficking in the context of peacekeeping operations.  Cosponsored by the CSIS Russia and Eurasia Program and Vital Voices Global Partnership.

NATO Conference on Trafficking in Persons 
March 4, 2004
U.S. and Norwegian missions to NATO, in cooperation with CSIS, hosted the first ever NATO conference on trafficking in persons, which helped lead to the adoption of a zero-tolerance NATO policy on human trafficking in June 2004 at the Istanbul summit.
