The Depleting Missile Defense Interceptor Inventory

The proliferation of missile threats has made air and missile defense interceptors the table stakes for entry into future conflicts, forcing the Department of Defense to either ante up and buy the necessary interceptors, or fold on its regional interests and bear the consequences.

The study is a web book that addresses the trends in North Korean and South Korean strategy, tactics, and force modernization in the broader context of security developments in Northeast Asia. It does so as a net assessment that does not chose a single view of developments in either country or neighboring states, and that compares the views and data in official Korean sources with those in official U.S., Japanese, and Chinese sources, and in the work of experts outside government sources. The analysis is supported by numerous maps, charts, and tables showing Chinese, U.S. and regional force trends.

On April 15, North Korea attempted a flight test of its BM-25 Musudan missile. The test ended in failure, according to the South Korean military. Pentagon officials stated the missile veered off course shortly after launch and possibly damaged the launcher, describing the incident as “a fiery, catastrophic failure.”
