Russian Military and Security Policy

Deepening understanding of Russia's goals and military capabilities.

The Russian armed forces have been increasingly active in recent years, with operations in Ukraine and Syria testing new systems and approaches. These interventions were made possible by a reform effort undertaken starting in 2008, following years of intermittent progress and regress. While the fruits of these reforms have been visible on the battlefield, questions remain about future developments, funding, the state of the Russian military-industrial complex, and the uses to which the Kremlin may put the armed forces. The CSIS Russia and Eurasia Program brings together experts on various aspects of the Russian military to deepen and broaden our understanding of Russia’s goals and its capabilities, as well as what they mean for the United States, Europe, and Russia’s neighbors, as well as for Russia itself.
