Tracking Promises: Analyzing the Impact of Feed the Future in Guatemala

Guatemala is the wealthiest of Feed the Future’s 19 focus countries globally, yet it grapples with severe malnutrition. The CSIS Global Food Security Project traveled to Guatemala in late 2016 to investigate the largest Feed the Future portfolio in the Americas, its technical strategy, its sectoral and geographical distribution of investments, and its coordination efforts within and beyond U.S. programming in the first six years. The team met with key U.S. government officials, U.S. Agency for International Development implementing partners, donor agencies, Guatemalan government officials, and representatives of the private sector to gain insights into the innovations, successes, and challenges of U.S. government assistance. This report outlines the Guatemalan country context, profiles the U.S. government response, and addresses a set of key questions related to on-the-ground implementation. It also presents a set of targeted policy recommendations focused on improving the efficiency, effectiveness, and sustainability of efforts to address food security and nutrition in Guatemala.
