The Success of Agricultural Integration under USMCA

Since NAFTA took effect in 1994 and the USMCA preserved its framework in 2020, tariff-free access has bound the United States, Mexico, and Canada into a single food system in which the three are one another’s most important agricultural markets. Complementary growing seasons, deeply integrated produce and livestock supply chains, and aligned rules have together made the regional food supply more reliable and more affordable than any one country could achieve on its own.

This panel will examine how the USMCA has strengthened one of the most deeply integrated and successful agricultural trading relationships in the world. It will also unpack recent research demonstrating how this integration has contributed to improved food security and greater stability in food access across North America.
