Will New FERC Orders Unlock Electricity for Data Centers?

On June 18, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) ordered regional grid operators to adopt best practices for improving speed to power for large loads while protecting ratepayers from cost shifting. The order encouraged operators to embrace certain approaches but avoided top-down mandates, respecting operators’ rights and acknowledging regional differences in power management. In this conversation, CSIS scholars and guests will analyze this new approach and ask if it will effectively realize national priorities for the power sector.
