Online Event: Countering Chinese Influence Activities in Australia

July 15, 2020 • 4:00 – 5:00 pm EDT

Please join CSIS for a conversation on China’s influence activities in Australia with The Honorable Malcolm Turnbull, former Prime Minister of Australia, on the occasion of a newly released CSIS report on Russian and Chinese influence activities in the Indo-Pacific and Europe. Introduced by Dr. John Hamre, President and CEO, and moderated by Dr. Amy Searight, CSIS Senior Associate for Asia, this conversation will discuss China’s efforts to influence and interfere with democratic politics and society in Australia and other democratic polities, and how democratic countries can most effectively respond to counter Beijing’s often covert and manipulative activities. This CSIS report utilizes Mr. Turnbull’s definition of malign and illegitimate foreign influence as activities that are “covert, coercive, or corrupting.” Prime Minister Turnbull will share his insights on the disruptive potential of China’s foreign influence activities in Australia and lessons for other democratic countries in countering this challenge.

This event was made possible by the Global Engagement Center at the U.S. Department of State, through the Information Access Fund (IAF) administered by the DT Institute.
