Report Launch: "Repel, Don't Expel": Strengthening NATO's Defense and Deterrence in the Baltic States
Brought to you by
Please join the CSIS International Security Program for the launch of a new report, “Repel, Don’t Expel”: Strengthening NATO’s Defense and Deterrence in the Baltic States, by Mark Cancian and Sean Monaghan. The report examines how Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has radically changed NATO’s security environment. The renewed sense of threat is perhaps most acute among the three Baltic members―Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia―which have long been vulnerable to Russian aggression. Decisions made at NATO’s 2022 Madrid summit set the alliance on the right course for dealing with this new environment. However, implementation of the Madrid commitments has been uneven. At the forthcoming NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, NATO leaders will need to ensure the decisions taken in Madrid are on a clear path to implementation.
This event will feature a short presentation by the report’s authors and a panel discussion on Baltic security with Michael Ryan, former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for European and NATO Policy, and Rebeccah Heinrichs, senior fellow at the Hudson Institute. Max Bergmann, director of the Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Program at CSIS, will moderate the panel.
This event is made possible by a grant from the Lithuanian Embassy.
