In Memoriam: Richard L. Armitage

WASHINGTON, April 14, 2025: CSIS President and CEO John J. Hamre today released the following statement in remembrance of the Honorable Richard L. Armitage:

“CSIS mourns deeply the passing of a great friend and a remarkable national leader, Richard Armitage. Rich served as deputy secretary of state in the George W. Bush administration, and earlier as an assistant secretary of defense in the Reagan and George H. W. Bush administrations. CSIS is proud that he served on the CSIS Board of Trustees for 15 years. Rich partnered with Dr. Joseph Nye to author a pathbreaking series of reports known as Nye-Armitage Reports. All dealt with the U.S.-Japan security relationship. The first Nye-Armitage Report was issued in 2000, and five subsequent reports were issued over the succeeding quarter century, with the most recent published in April 2024. All sponsored by CSIS, these reports chart the remarkable growth of this essential security partnership, a cause which united these policy leaders and shaped an era. Secretary Armitage never failed to offer his assistance for any Asia-related project undertaken by CSIS. He was a towering figure in the Asia security policy community. Rich Armitage was a courageous policy leader, a true patriot, and a loyal friend. We will miss him greatly.”
