AUKUS at Five: Progress, Challenges, and the Way Forward

The CSIS Australia Chair cordially invites you to a live virtual panel discussion with the original architects of AUKUS to examine where the agreement is at as we mark its five-year anniversary.

AUKUS, the Australia-UK-U.S. security partnership first announced on September 15, 2021, was intended to enhance deterrence by bolstering the three nations' submarine capabilities, and increasing their cooperation on cutting edge defense technologies. For all three countries, the pact represents a significant shift in strategic thinking, multilateral security cooperation, and defense integration. Five years on, AUKUS has made meaningful progress towards those ends, and has evolved to deal with unforeseen challenges and new developments.

Please join CSIS Senior Adviser and Australia Chair Dr. Charles Edel, Australia's Ambassador to the United States Greg Moriarty, UK Prime Minister's Special Representative on AUKUS Sir Stephen Lovegrove, and former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State and current Chairman of The Asia Group Kurt Campbell, for a virtual discussion from 8:00-9:00 AM ET on Thursday, September 17. The conversation will examine the original rationale behind the pact, progress that has been achieved to date, new and unexpected challenges it has faced, and the next steps required to sustain momentum and advance its ambitions.
