The State of DOD AI and Autonomy Policy

The CSIS Wadhwani Center for AI and Advanced Technologies is pleased to host Dr. Michael C. Horowitz, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Force Development and Emerging Capabilities (FDEC) at the Department of Defense (DOD), for a live-streamed discussion on January 9, from 11:30am-12:30pm ET.
This dialogue will examine the state of the DOD policy towards AI and autonomy, including the role of the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy in designing the future force and the connection between emerging technologies and defense planning in DOD policy. The discussion will also explore how the DOD approaches engaging with allies and partners on AI and autonomy policy, including the Political Declaration on Responsible Military Use of Artificial Intelligence and Autonomy.
Dr. Horowitz will be joined in this online-only event by CSIS’s Wadhwani Center for AI & Advanced Technologies Director Gregory C. Allen.
As the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Force Development and Emerging Capabilities, Dr. Horowitz aids in executing the defense strategy for the Secretary of Defense and advancing force development and planning. FDEC is also the lead for matters related to emerging capabilities in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy. He has expertise in defense innovation and emerging technologies such as AI and their intersections with global politics.
