Release: CSIS Is New Home for LeadershIP

Preeminent platform for discussions on IP and innovation policy issues will work alongside CSIS’s Renewing American Innovation Project

WASHINGTON, DC – November 29, 2023 – The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) today announced it is the new home of LeadershIP, a distinguished platform for elevating and analyzing critical policy issues at the intersection of intellectual property (IP), innovation, and national security. Following the move to CSIS, LeadershIP will continue under the guidance of executive director Dr. Kirti Gupta, who also serves as a CSIS senior adviser.

Dr. Gupta launched LeadershIP in 2014 while serving as chief economist at Qualcomm, and, alongside her partners, developed LeadershIP into the preeminent trans-Atlantic event series on IP and innovation policy, with regular conferences in Washington, DC, and Brussels. Through its annual events, LeadershIP brings together leading experts from academia, industry, and government to analyze and debate pressing policy issues in IP and innovation.

Now at CSIS, LeadershIP will work in conjunction with CSIS’s Renewing American Innovation Project to both continue its flagship event series and expand its footprint, facilitating and promoting cutting-edge research on today’s most pressing IP issues, such as IP theft, AI inventorship, and standards development.

“LeadershIP has served a major role in advancing the discussion on IP and driving its centrality within the innovation ecosystem,” said John J. Hamre, CSIS president and CEO. “We look forward to building upon this important work.”

“The LeadershIP community of scholars, practitioners, and policy influencers has long worked together to promote progress on IP and innovation issues,” said Dr. Gupta. “We will benefit greatly from the opportunity to work with CSIS, which has excelled at cultivating expertise at the intersection of IP, innovation, and national security.”

The next annual LeadershIP conference will be held at CSIS on April 9, 2024. To learn more about the conference and LeadershIP’s work, visit here.
