Building Civics Concepts in STEM and the Tech Sector

October 22, 2024 • 9:30 – 11:15 am EDT

Join the CSIS Defending Democratic Institutions Project and Senator Mark Warner (D-VA) for a public event to preview an upcoming report on Building Civics Concepts in STEM and the Tech Sector, on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, from 9:30 to 11:15 AM ET.

There is an urgent need to strengthen civic knowledge, skills, and engagement across all ages, including adults. This includes those who study and work in STEM fields. Technology plays an increasingly central role in our lives and society, in ways that are constructive and destructive. Tech innovators must understand the concept of civic responsibility inherent in “we the people,” and think critically about the impact of the work they do. At the same time, we need to inspire tech and science experts to help ensure that decisions by government, at all levels and across all three branches, are informed.

This conversation among technology, civics, and government experts will examine the role tech sector leaders can play in fostering a better understanding of America’s constitutional republic and the role of the individual in moving us towards a more perfect union. How can they best navigate today’s polarized political environment? How can strengthening civic knowledge, skills, and engagement foster a more cohesive community and workforce? Can including civic knowledge as a competitive advantage for job seekers help drive greater emphasis on civics in schools? What are the greatest challenges?

The event will be held both in-person at CSIS headquarters and virtually and will feature an introduction by Kemba Walden, President of the Paladin Global Institute, followed by a fireside chat with Suzanne Spaulding, Director of the Defending Democratic Institutions Project, and Senator Mark Warner (D-VA), Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. The event will then feature a panel discussion with prominent leaders, including Dr. Shawn Healy, Senior Director for Policy and Advocacy, iCivics, Dr. Lance Holbert, Director of the Leonore Annenberg Institute for Civics, the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Susan Landau, Professor in Cybersecurity and Policy, Department of Computer Science, Tufts University, Dave Leichtman, Director of Corporate Civic Responsibility, Democracy Forward, Microsoft, and Daniel Sutherland, Professor of Cybersecurity Law and Policy, George Washington University. Participants, attending in person can submit questions in advance and engage with our distinguished speakers and panelists.

This event is made possible by the generous support of Paladin Global Institute.
