South Korean president Lee Jae Myung will visit the United States from August 24 to 26 for his first summit meeting with U.S. president Donald J. Trump on August 25. The two leaders are expected to discuss ways to improve the U.S.-Korea alliance, including enhancing bilateral economic cooperation in semiconductors, batteries and shipbuilding, improving defense and security cooperation, and strengthening partnerships in advanced technologies and critical minerals.
Joining Mark Lippert and Victor Cha to discuss this and more are Dr. Philip A. Luck of CSIS and Gen. (ret.) Vincent Brooks, former Commander of UNC/CFC/USFK.
Philip A. Luck is director of the CSIS Economics Program and Scholl Chair in International Business. He served in the Biden-Harris administration as the deputy chief economist at the U.S. Department of State. Dr. Luck is an expert on the economics of international trade, global supply chains, and international migration policy. At the Department of State, Dr. Luck led analytical efforts to combat sanctions and export control evasion, increase global supply chain resilience, combat economic coercion, as well as improve migration policy design and implementation. Prior to joining the U.S. Department of State, Philip was an assistant professor of economics at the University of Colorado, Denver.
Vincent K. Brooks is a career Army officer who retired from active duty in January 2019 as the four-star general in command of all U.S. Forces in Korea, where he concurrently commanded United Nations Command as well as the Republic of Korea – U.S. Combined Forces Command comprising over 650,000 Koreans and Americans under arms. In retirement, General Brooks is a Director of the Gary Sinise Foundation; a visiting Senior Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs; a Distinguished Fellow at the University of Texas, with both the Clements Center for National Security and also the Strauss Center for International Security and Law; an Executive Fellow with the Institute for Defense and Business; and the President of VKB Solutions LLC.
