CSIS Launches Hess Center for New Frontiers

WASHINGTON, DC – May 16, 2023 – Today, the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) announced the establishment of the Hess Center for New Frontiers. The new Center is strategically designed to inform and connect leaders in government, civil society, and business with world-class CSIS research on the macrotrends and forces shaping the global landscape over the next century.

The Hess Center for New Frontiers will engage decisionmakers through its flagship New Frontiers presentation and a suite of hands-on executive workshops. Using innovative, data-driven analysis underway across CSIS, New Frontiers will deliver a dynamic and evergreen exploration of the transformational forces driving change—global demographics, water and food security, the energy transition and climate change, technology and economic competitiveness, and geopolitics and world order.

“Geopolitical, economic, social, and technological transformations are reshaping the global landscape at an accelerated pace, and the world as we know it today will look drastically different in a matter of decades,” said John J. Hamre, CSIS President and CEO. “The Hess Center for New Frontiers will provide a unique educational platform to help busy decisionmakers prepare for these societal shifts.”

The Hess Center for New Frontiers is made possible by a generous gift from CSIS Trustee John Hess and the Hess Foundation. The Center will be directed by Eric Palomaa, an experienced long-range analyst and strategist who also leads CSIS’s suite of educational foresight trainings. Palomaa previously served as director of partnerships for CSIS Executive Education and deputy director of the Abshire-Inamori Leadership Academy. Prior to CSIS, Palomaa served as director of development for the Brookings Institution and as an analyst at Argonne National Laboratory’s Computation Institute, where his research focused on geopolitics and agent-based modeling.
