CSIS Names Daniel Byman Senior Fellow with the Transnational Threats Project
WASHINGTON, DC – JUNE 28, 2023 – The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) today announced that Daniel Byman has joined CSIS as senior fellow with the International Security Program’s Transnational Threats Project.
Dr. Byman is considered among the world’s leading authorities on terrorism, counterterrorism, and the Middle East. His wide-ranging expertise across these areas will allow him to make significant contributions to the Transnational Threats Project’s work on terrorism and clandestine activities by Iran, Russia, and other countries.
“Dan is a superb researcher with an extensive track record of policy-relevant work, from Georgetown University’s Security Studies Program to the 9/11 Commission,” said Seth G. Jones, senior vice president and director of the International Security Program at CSIS. “He is a world-class scholar and will lead research on a range of topics, from terrorism to Iranian and Russian irregular warfare.”
Dr. Byman is currently a professor in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and director of Georgetown’s Security Studies Program. He is also an editor at Lawfare and a member of the State Department’s International Security Advisory Board. He served as vice dean of Georgetown’s undergraduate program at School of Foreign Service from 2015 until 2020, and as the director of the university’s Security Studies Program and Center for Security Studies from 2005 until 2010. He also led the university’s team in teaching a "Massive Open Online Course" on terrorism and counterterrorism for EdX.
From 2002 to 2004, Dr. Byman served as a professional staff member with the 9/11 Commission and with the Joint 9/11 Inquiry Staff of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees. He previously directed research at the RAND Corporation’s Center for Middle East Public Policy and worked as a Middle East analyst for the U.S. government. He is a graduate of Amherst College and received his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Dr. Byman joins the highly renowned CSIS Transnational Threats Project, which is known for its timely analysis on the threat and evolution of terrorist networks and the irregular activities of countries such as Russia, Iran, and China. The project’s most recent work has included influential analysis of offensive and defensive operations in Ukraine and the preparedness of the U.S. defense industrial base for a possible conflict with China.
