Deirdre Martin

Deirdre Martin is deputy director of the Japan Chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), where she manages the day-to-day operations of the program. Dr. Martin’s research has examined topics such as Japanese security policy, defense industrial base development, space-based capabilities, civil-military relations, intelligence issues, the U.S.-Japan alliance, and security dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region. Prior to joining CSIS, she was a visiting assistant professor of government at Colby College, where she taught courses on Japanese politics, East Asian security, and international relations. Dr. Martin has significant experience living in Japan, including conducting research as a Fulbright-Hays fellow, studying Japanese as a Blakemore Freeman fellow, and working for a member of the Japanese parliament in Nagano prefecture. She was also previously a visiting scholar at the University of Tokyo. She holds a PhD and an MA in political science from the University of California, Berkeley, an MA in international studies (Japan studies) from the University of Washington, Seattle, and a BA in international studies from the University of South Carolina. She is professionally proficient in Japanese.
