Lawrence Jones

Senior Associate (Non-resident), Energy Security and Climate Change Program

Lawrence E. Jones is a thought leader and practitioner with over 25 years of experience in the energy industry. He joined Edison Electric Institute (EEI) in September 2015 as vice president for international programs. EEI’s international programs have more than 65 member companies with operations in over 90 countries and have launched strategic initiatives that include the annual Global Electricity Forum, the Africa Utility Power Sector Exchange, and the Thomas Edison International Utility Executive Fellowship Program. Prior to joining EEI, Dr. Jones was North America vice president for utility innovation and infrastructure resilience at Alstom Grid, Inc., where he assisted utilities in formulating strategies for deploying new technology innovated business solutions. While at Alstom, he also served as vice president for policy, regulatory affairs, and industry relations.

Dr. Jones currently serves on the advisory boards of several industry organizations and academic institutions. He is the chair of the 21st Century Power Partnerships Public-Private Leadership Forum, an initiative of the Clean Energy Ministerial, and he is an honorary industry fellow at Monash Energy Materials and Systems Institute at Monash University in Australia. In June 2014, he was appointed to serve on the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Advisory Committee. Dr. Jones is the editor of Renewable Energy Integration: Practical Management of Variability, Uncertainty, and Flexibility in Power Grids, 2nd ed. (Academic Press, 2017). He has received numerous industry awards, including the 2017 Global Excellence Award in Renewable Energy from the Energy and Environment Foundation of India, the Renewable Energy World Network 2012 Excellence in Renewable Award for Leadership in Technology, and the Utility Variable Generation Integration Group 2012 Achievement Award. Dr. Jones received his M.Sc., licentiate, and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
