Sander Tordoir

Sander Tordoir is a non-resident senior associate with the Europe, Russia, and Eurasia Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and chief economist at the Centre for European Reform. His work focuses on eurozone monetary and fiscal policy, the institutional architecture of Economic and Monetary Union (EMU), European integration, trade, industrial policy, and Germany’s role in the European Union. Prior to joining the Centre for European Reform, Sander worked as an advisor to the European Central Bank (ECB) representative at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), covering the IMF’s surveillance of eurozone policies and sovereign debt issues. Before his posting in Washington, he was an economist in the ECB’s European Union Institutions and Fora Division, where he focused on the European Union’s policy response to the Covid-19 pandemic, economic and fiscal governance, Banking Union, European Stability Mechanism (ESM) reform, and the ECB’s relations with other European Union institutions. Sander was also a seconded expert to the German Federal Finance Ministry and a consultant at the World Bank. His policy research has been cited in media outlets such as Foreign Policy, the Financial Times, The Economist, and the New Statesman. Sander studied at Amsterdam University College and Columbia University, where he was a Fulbright scholar.
