The Russia-North Korea Axis

This project will look at the origins, evolution, and strategic implications of the Russia-North Korea axis

One of the most consequential changes to global order has been the emergence of the “Axis of Aggressors,” involving burgeoning security, political, and economic ties among China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea. Within this grouping, the Russian-North Korea leg has surfaced as an outwardly aggressive and revisionist element. Even with a ceasefire in Ukraine, this relationship could be sustained given the mutual benefits in terms of weapons, technology, and cash. The Russia-North Korea axis has strategic implications for regional security, U.S. extended deterrence, crisis stability, and nonproliferation. Assessing the durability of this alliance is crucial to understanding the evolving world order.

This project is made possible with general support from CSIS and the Smith Richardson Foundation.
