Maritime Security Dialogue: A Discussion with the Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps

Join the CSIS International Security Program and the U.S. Naval Institute for a Maritime Security Dialogue event with General Eric Smith, USMC, Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps on Monday, July 18, 2022, at 3:00 p.m. ET. Dr. Seth G. Jones will moderate a discussion on Force Design 2030 and Talent Management 2030 within the Marine Corps, featuring an introduction by VADM Pete Daly, USN, (Ret.), Chief Executive Officer and Publisher, United States Naval Institute.
The Maritime Security Dialogue series brings together CSIS and the U.S. Naval Institute, two of the nation's most respected non-partisan institutions. The series highlights the particular challenges facing the Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard, from national level maritime policy to naval concept development and program design. Given budgetary challenges, technological opportunities, and ongoing strategic adjustments, the nature and employment of U.S. maritime forces are likely to undergo significant change over the next ten to fifteen years. The Maritime Security Dialogue provides an unmatched forum for discussion of these issues with the nation’s maritime leaders.
General Smith is currently serving as the 36th Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps. General Smith graduated from Texas A&M University and was commissioned in 1987. He has commanded at every level, including Weapons Company, 2d Battalion, 2d Marine Regiment during Operation Assured Response in Monrovia, Liberia; 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment during Operation Iraqi Freedom; and 8th Marine Regiment/ Regimental Combat Team 8 during Operation Enduring Freedom. He also served in Caracas, Venezuela as part of the U.S. Military Group. As a General Officer, he commanded U.S. Marine Corps Forces Southern Command, 1st Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary Force, and Marine Corps Combat Development Command. General Smith’s staff assignments as a General Officer include serving as the Director of Capability Development Directorate, Combat Development and Integration; Senior Military Assistant to both the Deputy Secretary of Defense and Secretary of Defense; and Deputy Commandant for Combat Development and Integration.
