Powering America: Rethinking the Economics of Transmission

The CSIS Energy Security and Climate Change Program is pleased to invite you to a virtual discussion between Dr. Catherine Hausman, Professor of Public Policy at the University of Michigan’s Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, and Dr. Joseph Majkut, Director of the CSIS Energy Security and Climate Change Program. The discussion will focus on new research and emerging approaches to electricity transmission policy. 

The conversation will feature insights from Dr. Hausman’s recent research, including her 2025 American Economic Review article, “Power Flows: Transmission Lines, Allocative Efficiency, and Corporate Profits”. The paper examines the economic costs of incomplete integration between electricity markets and how the financial interests of incumbent generators can shape incentives for transmission investment and market reforms. 

This discussion is part of a series featuring scholars and other thought leaders exploring how ideas from economics, engineering, law, and related fields can offer policymakers new ways to understand persistent challenges in transmission.
