Powering America: Transmission Modernization and Flexibility

The CSIS Energy Security and Climate Change Program welcomes Dr. Yury Dvorkin, Associate Professor in the Departments of Civil and Systems Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, for a conversation on new approaches to electricity transmission policy, moderated by Dr. Joseph Majkut, Director of the CSIS Energy Security and Climate Change Program. 

The conversation will feature insights from Dr. Dvorkin’s recent research, including “Unlocking Transmission Flexibility under Uncertainty: Getting Dynamic Line Ratings into Electricity Markets”. The paper examines how dynamic line ratings and other grid-enhancing technologies can increase the utilization of existing transmission infrastructure by adjusting line capacity based on real-time conditions, and how these technologies could be better incorporated into electricity market operations and pricing. 

The discussion is part of a series featuring scholars and other thought leaders exploring how ideas from economics, engineering, law, and related fields can offer policymakers new ways to understand persistent challenges in transmission.
