Jason P. (JP) Gresh is a retired U.S. Army colonel and Foreign Area Officer (FAO) focused on Eastern Europe and transatlantic cooperation. Col. (Ret.) Gresh served as a military attaché in Ukraine and Russia, the security cooperation chief in Estonia, and most recently as military adviser to the deputy assistant secretary of defense for Russia, Eurasia, and Ukraine at the Pentagon. His experiences working with allies and partners have made him an astute observer of military culture and its impact on military operations and plans. He has written on manpower issues, conscription, and the evolution of Russian military operations and capabilities, alongside NATO and U.S. military posture and readiness in Europe. He started his Army career as an armor officer, serving with the 3rd Cavalry Regiment at Fort Carson, Colorado, as well as with the 1st Infantry Division in Germany and Iraq. JP previously served as a senior military fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and spent time as a fellow with the Kennan Institute. He has written professionally on security issues for the Eurasia region and contributed to several professional publications. JP speaks both Ukrainian and Russian and serves on the board of the Foreign Area Officer Association.
