The DRC's Path to Peace and Regional Integration
Brought to you by
Join the CSIS Africa Program for a conversation with Her Excellency Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner, Foreign Minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The ongoing conflict in eastern DRC remains a pressing challenge, despite a July 30 ceasefire brokered by Angola between the DRC and Rwanda. While the agreement has reduced fighting, it has yet to secure lasting peace.
Efforts to stabilize the region include the Luanda Peace Process, led by Angola’s President João Lourenço, which U.S. President Joe Biden recently endorsed during a meeting with DRC President Felix Tshisekedi. In addition to these challenges, the DRC's economy—rich in natural resources but hindered by conflict—faces significant obstacles in leveraging its potential for sustainable development.
This discussion will explore the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC, prospects for regional peace, and the DRC’s economic and geopolitical integration since joining the EAC. And coming as this visit does in the closing weeks of the outgoing Biden Administration, we will examine the state of bilateral relations between the US and DRC and discuss new areas of cooperation under President Trump.
This event is made possible by the generous support of Open Society Foundations.
