Iran War Disruptions to the Global Food System | The Futures Summit

April 16, 2026 • 2:00 – 2:30 pm EDT

The Iran War has raised urgent concerns about expanding impacts on global agricultural production and food security. Disruptions to the energy and fertilizer markets are already increasing global food prices and forcing some farmers to make difficult decisions about the spring planting season. Less than two months into the conflict, how has the Iran War affected global agriculture markets and global food prices? And what is the scale of the food insecurity consequences on the horizon?

As governments, companies, and humanitarian and development actors seek to better understand the risks to the global food system triggered by the Iran War, important questions remain. Caitlin Welsh, Director of the CSIS Global Food and Water Security Program is joined by David Laborde, Director, FAO Agrifood Economics Division to discuss the ongoing and potential impacts of the Iran War for food security, and how this conflict compares to the global disruptions of the recent past.

The CSIS Futures Summit is made possible through generous support from Chevron Inc. (Founding sponsor), ADM, Cisco, and the Embassy of Denmark in Washington D.C.
