Armitage Nye Reports on the U.S.-Japan Alliance

Reports from the bipartisan study group on the U.S.-Japan Alliance

In the year 2000, Richard Armitage and Joseph Nye brought together a bipartisan group to develop a vision for the U.S.-Japan alliance before the presidential election, to serve as a roadmap for the relationship regardless of which party won. Since then, they have built on this tradition of bipartisanship in the U.S.-Japan relationship with reports in 2007, 2012, 2018, 2020, and 2024. These “Armitage-Nye” reports have assessed the state of the U.S.-Japan alliance and suggested a new agenda for the challenges and opportunities on the horizon, both in the near and long term. CSIS has contributed to the bipartisan study group on the U.S.-Japan alliance and has hosted the release of the reports since 2007. Reports published by CSIS are available here.
