NATO Summit and European Strategic Forces Priorities | HTK

July 21, 2026 • 12:30 – 1:30 pm EDT

The July 2026 NATO Summit sought unprecedented increases in European defense spending and bolstered transatlantic defense industrial cooperation, including on advanced strike, space and surveillance, and air and missile defense. At the NATO Summit, President Trump also remarked that the United States would permit licensed production of Patriot air defenses in Ukraine. Although much remains unclear about the announcement, this decision marks an important development for Ukraine, which is quickly running out of interceptors in the face of Russian drone and missile barrages.

What does the recent NATO Summit mean for European deterrence and defense? What are the next steps for strengthening Ukrainian missile defense? And how can recent agreements on extended nuclear deterrence and space, intelligence, and surveillance enhance European security? To discuss these questions and more, please join the CSIS Defense and Security Department’s HTK Series for a conversation featuring Heather Williams, director of the CSIS Project on Nuclear Issues, Tom Karako, director of the CSIS Missile Defense Project, and Kari Bingen, director of the CSIS Aerospace Security Project.

This event is made possible by general support to CSIS.
